University of Birjand (Persian: دانشگاه بیرجند) was established in 1975 as an institute of higher education after the ratification of the 102nd session of the Council for Expansion of Higher Education in the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. UB launched its academic endeavours in the Faculty of Sciences within three departments of mathematics, physics and chemistry. In 1991, the Higher Education Institute was upgraded and renamed as the University of Birjand. After the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the University collaborated actively with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology for running the higher education programs in accordance with the principles set by the Cultural Revolution Committee for Universities. Furthermore, to move alongside with the Regional and Global Development Programs in the region, the university went through a series of reforms in education and research policies which put forward a new era in its activities.
At present, University of Birjand offers undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programs to more than 7000 students in 145 disciplines. Moreover, more than 250 academics hold the responsibility for conducting the programs in various departments. UB consists of 6 engineering departments, 5 agricultural departments, 8 humanities departments, 5 science departments, 2 art departments and 7 research centers, all of which being structured in 5 faculties within 5 campuses. The inter-universities collaboration program which aims at scientific cooperation at an international level has yielded a new, and promising dimension of academic achievement and research.
