I think this template is a bit too big to fit at the top of the article. It's crowding the lead and fighting for space with the smaller IPA-template. Could we restyle it to make it go in the center (I'm not sure how to do this) and stick it down at the bottom, just like the consonant template?

At a minimum, subst'ing in the IPA vowel chart will reduce the width (addressing the earlier comment here) and decouple the logically separate tasks of navigating the vowel articles versus describing the IPA vowel symbols. Subst'ing was also discussed in the context of navigating vowels that don't have dedicated IPA symbols, at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2008 November 16#Template:Near-close_central_unrounded_vowel.
