Michael Shields (born 1986) is an Irish sportsperson, most notable for playing Gaelic football.
Shields played football with his local club St. Finbarr's.[1] He won a All-Ireland Under-21 Football Championship title with Cork in 2007.[2] He was also a member of the Cork senior panel which reached the final of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship that year, only to be heavily defeated by Kerry.[3]
On 28 November 2007, following a successful three-week trial[4] with top level Australian rules football club Carlton, Shields signed a two-year international rookie contract,[5] becoming the third Cork native to sign with the club, joining former hurlers Setanta and Aisake Ó hAilpín. However, after the first half of the season, he decided to return to Ireland in July 2008, saying he "missed home" and Australian rules football "wasn't for him". [6]
