ISO 3166-2:TW

From MedBib.com - Medicine & Nature

ISO 3166-2:TW is an ISO standard which defines geocodes: it is the subset of ISO 3166-2 which applies to "Taiwan". It covers the current jurisdiction of the Republic of China except the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are historically and administratively part of Fujian. The designation "Taiwan, Province of China" has been made with pressure from the People's Republic of China over the political status of Taiwan. Another confusing problem is that ISO 3166-2:CN (for China) includes a code for "Taiwan" at CN-71.

Each two-part code consists of the ISO 3166-1 code for Taiwan (TW) and a 3-character-alphabetic sub-code, hyphenated together.

† These are centrally-administered municipalities not actually part of the ROC's Province of Taiwan. Since they were elevated after 1949 by the Kuomintang, the PRC considers them still to be part of the Province. They are nevertheless distinguished from the provincial municipalities of Taiwan.
