Eyl is an ancient town in the northern Puntland region of Somalia. The prominent Somali clans in the area are the Majeerteen and Leelkase sub-clans of the Darod.

Eyl is situated near the Hafun peninsula, the location of most of Somalia's casualties from the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.[citation needed]

Piracy

As of 2008, Eyl has become a pirate haven,[1] with more than a dozen ships being held captive by pirate crews.[2] The Puntland government has acknowledged that they are relatively powerless to stop pirate activities,[3] but it also has been suggested that members of the Puntland administration may have links to the pirates.[4] French commandos decided a hostage rescue in Eyl was too dangerous and carried out a rescue of two French sailors before they could be taken there.[4]
