Shanghai currently has 6 city elevated roads (including 2 ring roads) and 18 expressways (including 2 ring expressways).
Most city elevated roads are in downtown Shanghai, and most of them are elevated above ground level. The distance between exits on city elevated roads is much shorter than on expressways. The 6 city elevated roads are all free, but some kinds of cars and trucks are forbidden, as are pedestrians and bikes. Vehicles with non-Shanghai number plates are not allowed to use the elevated roads during rush hours.
Most way of Inner Ring Road is elevated on Zhongshan Road. The inner ring road is: Zhongshan Nan Yilu-Zhongshan Nan Erlu-Zhongshan Xi Lu-Zhongshan Bei Lu-Ningguo Lu-Huangxing Lu-Yangpu Bridge-Luoshan Lu-Longyang Lu-Nan Pu Bridge-Zhongshan Nan Yi Lu. Luo Shan Road and Longyang Road are not elevated sections and pedestrians and bikes are permitted to use them. The Inner Ring Road is 48km long and was completed in December 1994.
The Middle Ring Road is a city expressway that includes tunnels, ground level road and elevated road. The northern part of the Middle Ring Road is an elevated road, while the western part was constructed below the surface as a 'city fastway'.

Shanghai uses an alphanumeric system for naming expressways. It is "A" plus a number. From Yingbing Avenue (A1), in a clockwise direction, other expressways are given succeeding numbers (A2, A3, etc.). For ring expressways, the designations A20, A30, A40, etc., are used. For expressways connecting to other provinces, a double naming system of "A" Series plus traditional names is used, with the traditional names being most widely cited; for example, "Huning Expressway (A11)".
