A Turkish name whose meaning is disputed. It is assumed that it means poet or bard . It has also been claimed that it means "deeply in love", which is the love of God, as these poets were Sufi mytstics. Yunus Emre is the best known of those poets. It is also possible that the word is actually Middle Persian in origin as Emre means pure wine in that ancient language, and wine is a symbol for the love of God in Sufi mysticism.
The name became very popular in the 1980s in Turkey because by some the word was thought to be purely Turkish and by others the character Yunus Emre was seen as a symbol of peace during those politically chaotic years in Turkey and the name was used to honour this pacifist poet.[citation needed]
