Coffee Kids was founded in 1988 by David Abedon, Dean Cycon and Bill Fishbein.[5] All three founders had spent time in South America, where they first came into contact with coffee growing communities.Bill Fishbein had been in the coffee business for several years and knew the structure of the industry. Dean Cycon had a decade of international development experience with indigenous peoples in different countries. David Abedon was involved with natural resource policy and education at URI.[6]
Frustrated by the impoverishment of the coffee farmers they met, as well as the lack of financial resources available to coffee farmers, Abedon, Cycon and Fishbein resolved to form Coffee Kids as a way to support coffee growing communities around the world.[7]
