It is bordered by the Sanaag and Sool regions to the west, Nugaal to the south, the Gulf of Aden to the north, and the Indian Ocean to the east. In terms of land mass, Bari is the largest province in the Somali republic. The highest point in this region is Mount Bahaya (2200 meters); other notable peaks include Karkoor.
Bari was particularly hard hit by the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Over a hundred people were killed on the Hafun peninsula and the coastal road, linking the area with the rest of Somalia, was severely damaged.
