In March 2009, Barack Obama Academy in Oakland, California became notable as the first middle school in the United States to be officially named or renamed after U.S. President Barack Obama. The middle school, which opened in 2007, was formerly known as the Alternative Learning Community. It has 35 students, most of whom are low income African-Americans. [1] The name change was prompted by the school's students. [2]
