Bannus is a given name, the occurrence of which is first documented in the writings of Josephus, when referring to a hermit. A Bannus Lough exists in Ireland. It is also a reality-altering machine in a Diana Wynne Jones novel called Hexwood.

Bannus: a medieval term used in conjunction with kings, dukes and counts. According to Blockmans and Hoppenbrouwers' "Introduction to Medieval Europe, 300-1550" 'The royal prerogative to command and rule.'
