Batteries and Range

BYD uses iron-phosphate-based lithium-ion batteries for the F3DM. BYD has said those batteries are "inherently safe" because they are more chemically stable, although they compromise to some extent on the ability to pack energy in each cell, compared with more conventional lithium-ion batteries.[3]

The company's parent is currently the world's largest producer of cellphone batteries. BYD says the car will have a 68 miles (109 km)[4] all-electric range with an auxiliary engine to allow operation in the hybrid mode.[5]

Price

Preliminary pricing reports indicated that it would sell for about 100,000 Chinese Yuan ($15,000 USD),[6] although more recent reports suggest that its retail price will be closer to $25,000 USD.[7] ($22,000) [8]

Competitors

Industry analysts[who?] say the new car is similar in design to General Motors Corp.'s Chevy Volt, but is due to hit the market two years earlier than either the Volt or Toyota Motor Corp.'s new breed of hybrid-electric car.[citation needed] Both GM and Toyota say they are taking more time to make sure lithium-ion batteries they are using for their electric cars are safe.[citation needed]
