Apple Valley Inn

From MedBib.com - Medicine & Nature

The Apple Valley Inn was a hotel and restaurant established in Apple Valley, California to help developer Newton Bass attract wealthy land buyers to the southern California desert town. Bass and partner Bernard "Bud" Westlund owned Apple Valley Ranchos Land Development Co.[1] It is a landmark in the community and figures prominently in the history of Apple Valley.

Movie stars Roy Rogers and Dale Evans bought property in the area and became leading citizens in Apple Valley. Other famous people brought in included: Bob Hope, Marilyn Monroe, Vice President Richard Nixon. [2]

The Inn originally allowed only white Christians as patrons. Apple Valley Ranchos Land established racial policies in its covenants, conditions and restrictions (CC&Rs) dated Feb 14, 1946.[3] The restrictions were increasingly relaxed throughout the 1950s as GI Bill money was used to purchase property.

Singer Pearl Bailey was refused the opportunity to stay at the Inn or buy land controlled by AV Ranchos Land. She bought property a few miles north and established a small colony of black artists near Bell Mountain.

The Inn opened on Thanksgiving Day 1948.[2]

The Inn closed to the public in 1987. It was purchased by the Lakritz Partnership in November 2003 and briefly reopened. The property changed hands several times and a brain injury center operated in the main buildings for about 10 years.

The Inn was visited by celebrities such as Bob Hope, Marilyn Monroe and John Wayne in its heyday.
